THE JOHNS HOPKINS
Date Effective: February 18, 1997 POLICY AND PROCEDURE MEMORANDUM ADMINISTRATION AND GOVERNANCE - 14 SUBJECT: Endowed Professorships Endowed professorships are meant to provide unrestricted funds to be utilized in ways that increase innovative and cost-effective enterprises enhancing the quality of scientific research, teaching, and public health practice in the areas and for the purpose for which they are designed. Broadly speaking, two forms of professorships exist: 1. Administrative Leadership Professorships These professorships are held by members of the School’s academic leadership (deans, department chairs, program directors — e.g., by virtue of the position they occupy.) The unrestricted revenue from the associated endowment is used to best advance the program/unit for which they provide leadership. The endowed professorship is held by the individual only for the period during which they formally occupy their administrative/leadership position as determined by the Dean. 2. Academic Leadership Professorships Faculty other than those occupying a designated administrative function may hold an endowed professorship for the purposes of academic achievement and for academic leadership in a specific area of expertise. Income from the associated endowment is meant to be used in ways that maximize accomplishments in the academic area to which they are providing leadership by virtue of their personal accomplishments. It is generally expected, however, that income from the endowment would be used to offset general funds allocation to the named professor. Such individuals will hold these endowed chairs for a finite term mutually agreed upon by the faculty member and the Dean, unless otherwise specified by the endowment agreement. Subject to approval by the Advisory Board and through the President and Board of Trustees, the Dean may recommend initial appointment, renewal, or extension of the incumbent’s endowed position upon appropriate review. |
