THE JOHNS HOPKINS
BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
OFFICE OF THE DEAN
Date Effective: October 25, 1988
POLICY
AND PROCEDURE MEMORANDUM ADMINISTRATION AND GOVERNANCE - 12
SUBJECT: Erwin Shayne Benjamin Award for Student Research
GENERAL
STATEMENT
Dr. Gordon Smith and Ms. Katy Benjamin, sister of the
late Erwin Shayne Benjamin, wish to establish a memorial fund to endow an
annual award of $500.00, for a period of five years, bearing the name "The
Erwin Shayne Benjamin Award."
POLICY
The award has been established to recognize a
continuing student from any department in the Bloomberg School of Public Health
who is engaged in research in a topic relevant to congenital birth defects,
and/or childhood disabilities. The
award will be based on the merit of the research proposal.
PROCEDURES
Each year, beginning in December 1988, a memorandum
will be sent to appropriate departments soliciting nominations of doctoral
candidates who have produced a research proposal which merits consideration for
the award. Nominations must be
supported by a letter from the student's advisor, a copy of the student's
transcript and a brief (no more than one page) description of the proposal.
The Honors and Awards Committee for the School shall
appoint a faculty panel to assess the quality of the nominations. Based on the judgement of the faculty panel,
selection will be made on the doctoral candidate who has produced an
outstanding research proposal on a topic relevant to congenital birth defects,
and/or childhood disabilities.
Eligibility is limited to continuing doctoral
candidates in the Bloomberg School of Public Health who have completed or are
about to complete at least one year in residence and who are planning to
undertake dissertation research in congenital birth defects and/or childhood
disabilities.
The monetary award of $500.00 will be conferred
annually, and shall be payable in December of each year for five years,
beginning in 1988. At the time of
graduation, the names of the recipients of the award shall be listed in the
Convocation program.
