CAROLYN LANGFITT began her professional career as a librarian for the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and has continued to be involved with libraries throughout her life. She served on the Board of the Libraries of the University of Pennsylvania for a decade. For many years she served as a board member and as president of the White Williams Foundation, a 200-year-old institution that supports Philadelphia public school honor students who live at the poverty level and encourages them to access higher education. Mrs. Langfitt has also had a 10-year association with the Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti. She has worked at the hospital and helps to raise funds for its acute care services and community health programs which operate in the villages and mountains of Haiti. Also a board member of READ Nepal, Mrs. Langfitt has assisted in raising funds to build libraries in the villages of Nepal to promote literacy. (READ Nepal received the Access to Learning Award of $1 million from the Gates Foundation for building over 35 libraries in Nepal.)
