C. SYLVIA BROWN grew up in rural King William County, Virginia and attended school in Middlesex County. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and went on to Howard University to pursue a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She received a master of science degree in health education from Indiana University. Ms. Brown’s career pattern has been divided between education and business. She taught middle school in Red Bank, New Jersey and in Hyde Park, New York. Locally, she taught at Baltimore City Community College and for five years she was assistant director of Admissions and Registration. On the business side, Ms. Brown spent 13 years in property development and management with the Brown family’s real estate company in Baltimore. Ms. Brown has volunteered all of her adult life in community activities. She is currently a volunteer at the Women’s Network of the Enterprise Foundation, and she mentors at an elementary school in Baltimore. She is a member of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute’s Community Collaborating Committee, and she serves on the Baltimore Partners for Enhanced Learning Board of Directors. In 2002, Ms. Brown was the chair of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center/Maryland Public Television Women’s Health Conference. In early 2002, the Brown family announced the creation of the Turning the Corner Achievement Program (TCAP), an unprecedented education initiative for African-American middle school students in Baltimore. Managed jointly by Associated Black Charities and the Baltimore Community Foundation, TCAP will provide Baltimore’s middle school youth with a unique combination of educational and personal support to prepare them for success in high school and beyond. Ms. Brown enjoys traveling, cycling and golf. One of her greatest joys is spending time with her grandsons.
