ERNEST A. BATES is the founder, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of American Shared Hospital Services, a publicly traded health care company. A Board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Bates is emeritus vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University and serves on the Board of Visitors of Johns Hopkins Medical Center and the Johns Hopkins Neurosurgery Advisory Board. He serves on the boards of the University of Rochester, FasterCures, the Milken Institute and Salzburg Global Seminar. Dr. Bates was appointed to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth and the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel. From 1981 to 1987 he was a member of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, and he served on the California High Speed Rail Authority from 1997 to 2003. Dr. Bates is a member of the Board of Overseers at University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing. He is the capital campaign chair and a member of the Board of Directors for the Museum of the African Diaspora; a member of the Copia: The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts Board of Trustees; and a member of the Brookings Institution. Dr. Bates is a partner in Black Coyote Wines. He is a graduate of the School of Arts and Sciences of the Johns Hopkins University, and he earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. |
