ASHOK AGARWAL was trained in general medicine and public health, and has been involved in setting up unique public health and rural development institutions in India over the last 25 years. After graduating from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health with a master of public health degree in 1983, he set up the Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) in Jaipur—it was the first such institution in the region. In addition, he established a blood bank and hematology research center in Kolkata (Calcutta) to serve the poor, while also providing the most modern hematological services in eastern India. He is the managing trustee of Bhoruka Charitable Trust (Mumbai, India), which operates in 500 villages throughout Rajasthan to provide education, clean water, rural health and economic development. Dr. Agarwal is involved in the world’s largest user fee-based rural drinking water supply, Aapni Yojana, which supplies water to 350 villages and a half million people. Dr. Agarwal serves on many government boards and committees in the areas of water, health and rural development. Presently he serves on the boards of Sobhasaria Engineering College, BRCM College of Engineering and Technology, the Environmental Sanitation Institute, and the Institute of Development Studies.
