Writing Skills: Translating Research for Policy and Practice

These modules are intended to help public health students and practicing professionals hone their writing and communication skills to effectively “translate” scientific evidence into public health policy and practice. The modules include video tutorials and interactive exercises.

I. Translating public health research for use in policy and practice

This tutorial addresses the importance of translating research for public health policy and practice, the factors that make this kind of communication difficult, and ways to do it more effectively.

II. Writing Policy Briefs module

This module provides guidance and tools for writing policy briefs that engage stakeholders and convey the implications of scientific evidence for policy and practice.

III. Writing Briefing Memos module

This module provides guidance on writing effective briefing memos. Like policy briefs, briefing memos inform decision-making by providing background, breaking down a complex problem, and identifying the implications of new information.
