Examples of Use

The Maternal and Child Health Leadership Skills Development Series (MCHLDS) is designed for adaptability: Follow module outlines in their entirety, or pick and choose from among module components. Use materials as written, or adapt them to suit your needs.

This section of the website describes how the MCHLDS has been used in different settings and time frames and provides agendas and adapted materials for your reference and use.

One-Day Workshops

Leadership and Conflict Resolution

Description of session:

The Women's and Children's Health Policy Center (WCHPC) held a one-day workshop for MCH professionals and community partners in HHS Region 3 (Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia). Participants came from local and state agencies, nonprofit organizations, universities and medical centers.

Through this workshop, the WCHPC hoped not only to enhance individual leadership skills, but also to promote regional collaboration and provide resources for attendees to implement leadership skills training in their own organizations. Some module components were adapted for use in this workshop, and some activities were added.

A short, fun personality assessment, the Pace Palette, was used to spark discussion, create energy, and provide a "shorthand" frame of reference throughout the day.

Description of session:

This 3.5 hour skills building session was offered at the 2009 Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) conference by Marjory Ruderman and Holly Grason of the WCHPC and Dr. Kris Risley of the University of Illinois-Chicago Maternal and Child Heath Program. The session included the Pace Palette assessment and a coaching demonstration and practice developed by Dr. Risley.

MCH Leadership Enrichment Seminar for MHS students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Description of sessions:

The MCH Leadership Enrichment Seminar course was available to masters students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the 2008-09 academic year. The intent in seminar development was to draw on the content of the web modules of the MCHLDS to address MHS student requests for more professional and leadership skills development opportunities in the PFRH MHS program. The seminar offers a flexible, low-burden approach to meeting the professional development needs of masters students.

This seminar course comprised seven 60-minute sessions. Out-of-classtime work burden on the students was no more than 1 hour/session. Student comments and requests at the mid-course timepoint and upon conclusion indicated preferences for:

  • Class time spent in small group work.
  • Materials that are "translated" for a younger audience with less work and life experience than the established professionals (target audience of the MCH LDS).
  • "Tip sheets" for each session that could be added to a "leadership skills tool box."
  • A component that is individualized targeted "coaching," based on an initial comprehensive assessment of areas of strengths and weaknesses. Tie targeted coaching sessions to past work experience. Could be done as one-on-one or in small groups of people wishing to work on same/similar skills. The coaching sessions could be brought back to the whole group. Examples of pertinent skill areas suggested were supervising, team building/running meetings, conflict negotiations, interviewing (so can use that skill in garnering field placements).
  • Where available, use videos of scenarios and have the students critique the people/processes in the video (e.g., NASA video).

Description of sessions:

The American Public Health Association (APHA) MCH Student Fellows participated in a series of brief conference calls exploring leadership topics over the course of several months. The series was coordinated and led by Lauren Raskin Ramos, Secretary of the APHA MCH Section and Director of Programs for AMCHP. An initial in-person session provided an orientation to the program and some introductory activities.

Monthly Small-Group Meetings

Description of sessions:Meetings are scheduled once a month for three hours. One module is completed at each session. A facilitator prepares the agenda in advance to ensure that one module can be completed in one meeting. Generally the MCHLDS outlines are followed but there are some activities that are skipped due to time constraints.

Participants read the case study in advance and work on their Self Assessment and Individual Development Plans between meetings. The meetings usually begin by sharing self-assessment scores and comments (for those who want to share). Videos are viewed together during the meetings with time allocated to watch all of the interview clips. If a module is not completed in the time allotted, the module content is carried over to the next meeting if the group is in agreement.

Materials:The facilitator developed a 3-ring binder for each participant. The binder contains the agendas, presentation slides, worksheets, case studies, and resource lists needed to complete the modules.
