Welch Center Core Faculty member Nisa Maruthur, MD, MHS, is the lead author of a study published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine this week. The study, titled “Early Response to Preventive Strategies in the Diabetes Prevention Program,” was the subject of a Johns Hopkins Medicine press release and was the featured item in the July 19th edition of the online Inside Hopkins. Dr. Maruthur and her co-authors report that weight loss of 10% within six months of diagnosis of pre-diabetes can dramatically reduce a patient’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next three years.
Dr. Maruthur was interviewed for the Hopkins press release, and explained that doctors don’t effectively provide behavior modification programs, in part because insurance rarely covers them. She points out that the new research suggests just how valuable — and potentially cost-effective — such interventions could be. Other Welch Center co-authors of the study were Dr. Jeanne Clark and the late Dr. Fred Brancati.
