Dr. Deidra Crews Chosen as IOM Fellow

Dr. CrewsWelch Center Associate Faculty member Deidra Crews, MD, ScM, an assistant professor in the Division of Nephrology at Bayview Medical Center, has been selected as the 2013-2015 Gilbert S. Omenn Anniversary Fellow at the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The Fellowship offers “an exceptional learning environment to selected early career scholars and future leaders in medicine and public health.” The fellowship is granted to scholars “who will integrate biomedical research, population health, and health policy and will expand the nation’s capacity for research, leadership, and policy development that advances health.”

As the Omenn Fellow, Dr. Crews will participate actively in the work of an expert study committee or roundtable at the IOM and contribute to its reports or other output. The experience will introduce Dr. Crews to a variety of experts and perspectives, including legislators, government officials, industry leaders, executives of voluntary health organizations, scientists, and other health professionals.  She will also be assigned an IOM member who will serve as a senior mentor during the two years of the fellowship.

Dr. Crews will attend a week-long orientation at the IOM in October and will attend the Annual Meeting of the IOM also in October where she will be introduced.
