Welch Center core faculty member Josef Coresh, MD, PhD, MHS, is among the authors of an original article appearing in the July 5, 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The article, titled "Estimating Glomerular Filtration Rate from Serum Creatinine and Cystatin C", presents two equations for estimating this common measure of kidney function and compares them and other existing equations of GFR in terms of their "usefulness in improving the classification of patients with chronic kidney disease."
The research concludes that " the combination of serum creatinine and serum cystatin C is more accurate than either marker alone for estimating GFR. The new equations represent an advance over currently available equations across the range of GFR and in relevant subgroups."
The research report was produced for the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), and was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
