Welch Center Authors in Annals of Internal Medicine

The Annals of Internal Medicine is scheduling the early release today of an article on insulin delivery and glucose monitoring whose authors include three Welch Center core faculty members. The article, titled “Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Methods of Insulin Delivery and Glucose Monitoring for Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” will appear in print in the journal’s September 4, 2012 issue. Welch Center co-authors are Jessica Yeh, PhD, Nisa Maruthur, MD, MHS, and last-named author Sherita Golden, MD, MHS.

The study of treatment and monitoring outcomes reviewed 33 randomized, controlled trials of patients who suffer from type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are treated with either multiple daily insulin injections or continuous insulin infusion. The study also examined these trials to compare the outcomes of self-monitoring vs. continuous monitoring of glucose. Findings indicate that newer, more convenient means of glucose treatment and monitoring can confer benefits on patients.

Johns Hopkins Medicine issued a
news release about the study yesterday.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which funded the study, will also be reporting the results today.
