The Hopkins POWER Trial team has been informed that their most recent article is the winner of the Society of General Internal Medicine's (SGIM) Best Published Research Paper of the Year Award. The article, "Comparative Effectiveness of Weight-Loss Interventions in Clinical Practice," was published in the November 24, 2011, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. According to SGIM, the purpose of the award is "to highlight . . . outstanding scholarship," and it recognizes "the contribution the paper has made to generalist research."
Welch Center Director, Professor Lawrence Appel, MD, MPH, is the principal investigator of the Hopkins POWER Trial and the first-named author of the NEJM article. Several other Welch Center faculty members were part of the research team and co-authors of the article. They are, in the order of authors listed in the article, Dr. Jeanne Clark, Dr. Hsin-Chieh (Jessica) Yeh, Dr. Nae-Yuh Wang, Dr. Gail Daumit, Dr. Edgar (Pete) Miller, and Dr. Frederick Brancati. Several other members of the Welch Center family who were among the study's authors are Reseach Associates Arlene Dalcin, RD, and Jeanne Charleston, RN, and Research Program Manager Jeffrey Reynolds--all three from the ProHealth Research Facility--and Nowella Durkin, Senior Programmer and Analyst for the trial.
Dr. Appel will be presented with the award on May 11, 2012, at the SIGM Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. The acronym POWER stands for "Practice-based Opportunities for Weight Reduction." The results of the study and their implications for improving the delivery of effective weight-loss assistance to patients have attracted the attention of both the medical and general press since the article's publication.
