Welch Center core faculty member Professor Lisa Cooper, MD, MPH, has been appointed to the James F. Fries Professorship in Medicine. Dr. James Fries, who received training at Hopkins, is Professor Emeritus at Stanford. The author of over 280 scientific papers and 11 books, Dr. Fries is internationally recognized as a leader in strategies to promote healthy aging, in behavioral approaches to decrease morbidity, and in managing large-scale cohort studies. Dr. Fries and his wife, Sarah Tilton Fries, created this professorship to encourage the Clinical Scholar who acts as a "change agent" to improve health and the medical care system. Preference will be given to a faculty member engaged in health outcomes research, clinical epidemiology, and/or health policy relevant research. The Fries Chair was formerly held by GIM’s Dr. Neil Powe who vacated the chair to become Chair of Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital.
Dr. Lisa Cooper received her undergraduate education at Emory University, and earned her medical doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She subsequently completed her internship and residency at the University of Maryland/Baltimore VA Medical Center. Dr. Cooper then spent three years as a GIM Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine during which time she earned her MPH degree from the Bloomberg School of Public Health. She joined the GIM faculty in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1994. In addition, Dr. Cooper holds joint appointments in the departments of Health Policy and Management, of Epidemiology and of Health, Behavior and Society in the Bloomberg School of Public Health and in the School of Nursing.
Dr. Cooper is Director of the Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities, a partnership of the Johns Hopkins schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. Among her many honors and achievements, Dr. Cooper was chosen to receive a MacArthur Fellowship Award, is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
