In Memoriam:  Nancy Fink, 1952-2010

On July 27, 2010, the Welch Center lost Nancy E. Fink, MA, MPH, a beloved and respected colleague. While at the Welch Center, Nancy climbed to the rank of Senior Scientist in the Department of Epidemiology in recognition of her outstanding leadership, research, and teaching. She was an inspiring mentor to dozens of trainees and a trusted advisor to Welch Center faculty. Nancy was a stellar faculty member who skillfully guided students through the maze of opportunities at Hopkins and who showed remarkable leadership in directing complex epidemiologic studies.

Nancy began her career at Johns Hopkins as a Research Associate in the Department of Epidemiology in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 1981. Subsequently, she became an Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Beginning in 1998, Nancy held faculty appointments in both schools jointly, in the Department of Epidemiology and in the Department of Medicine. She was project Director for the Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for ESRD (CHOICE) Study. She designed and directed the first course on practical skills in the conduct of epidemiologic research and helped guide the overall curriculum in the Clinical Epidemiology concentration area. Over the course of her career, she published more than 90 journal articles and book chapters and over 150 abstracts. She influenced the careers of many students, fellows and faculty members through her work.

Still, what most colleagues and students will remember and treasure is Nancy’s warmth. She was quick to smile and radiated a genuine interest in the personal and academic well-being of her students, staff and colleagues.

Nancy was also a dedicated wife and mother. Nancy’s devotion to her husband, Jeff Singer, and her twin sons, Max and Zachary Singer, as well as to her extended family, was evident to all who worked with her.

A memorial service will be held on September 5, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Health Care for the Homeless, 421 Fallsway, Baltimore, where her husband is the director. Remembrances and photographs can be emailed to for inclusion. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to The Nancy Fink Fund of Health Care for the Homeless, 421 Fallsway, Baltimore, MD 21202.
