Dr. Lawrence Appel, Welch Center Core Faculty member, has been appointed to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. He is one of 13 nationally recognized experts named to the panel, which will advise the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on revisions to the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer stated that the guidelines “have become recognized as the Nation’s cornerstone of Federal food policy.” They are important in nutrition education and in formulating food assistance policies. The Advisory Committee’s task is to review the scientific literature, receive public comment, and submit to the two Secretaries an advisory Report to be used in setting the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Advisory Committee will set to work immediately, with its first meeting scheduled for later this week.
Congratulations to Dr. Appel on this distinction!
