Workshops

The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) regularly conducts workshops on a variety of injury prevetion topics, ranging from program design and implementation to research methodology, basic and advanced data analysis, injury surveillance systems and trauma registries, among others. Our workshops are tailored for a targeted audience to fit a country's educational needs and are conducted in collaboration with local agencies and researchers. We also conduct regional and global workshops to foster cross-country/cross-contextual learning.

Several targeted workshops have been conducted in each of the countries participating in the Road Safety in 10 Countries project (RS-10) and have been tailored to meet local needs. More than 600 individuals across the 10 countries have been trained through these workshops, which have covered numerous topics, including data collection and management; evaluation methods for road safety; public health research methods and data analysis, data management; handling of data for injury surveillance and advanced data analysis.

In addition to these in-country workshops, JH-IIRU has also facilitated cross-country learning, through a special session at the Safety 2010 World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion in London, and a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) collaborators workshop held in Baltimore in October 2011. These workshops facilitated cross-country discussion on data-collection strategies, standardizing methods across countries, and challenges and planning for more effective evaluation strategies in each country. Based on the success of these sessions, we are exploring hosting a scientific session on RS-10 at the 2012 World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion in New Zealand.
