Disparities Training Curriculum

Our curriculum uses a transdisciplinary approach that integrates theories, concepts and methods used by investigators in our three partner schools. It combines original elements with proven training tools. Along with coursework taken for degree programs, trainees attend monthly sessions covering disparities-specific research lessons learned, research in progress, roundtables with experts, journal clubs and community-based research and service learning experiences. The Training Core also holds a monthly seminar, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Consortium of Disparities Centers. Our Center sponsors two guest speakers annually.

Our curriculum sessions cover a wide range of topics. Below is a list of sessions:

  • Round Table Discussions (topics vary)
  • Research in progress presentations, by faculty and trainees
  • Research lessons learned: Cultural competence and communication skills in health disparities research
  • Research lessons learned: Ethical and safety issues conducting health disparities research
  • Research lessons learned: Selecting and training staff for health disparities research
  • Research lessons learned: Development of assessment and intervention materials for health disparities research and underserved populations
  • Research lessons learned: Generating community and organizational support for health disparities research
