About Safety LaneSafetyLane is a dedicated safety resource center for the families who receive pediatric well child care through the Johns Hopkins Harriet Lane Clinic. SafetyLane operates through an innovative partnership among theJohns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, the Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics, and Johns Hopkins HealthCare, the insurer of most Harriet Lane Clinic families. SafetyLane builds on and extends the Hopkins model of interactive educational displays, free expert and tailored safety advice, and access to low cost safety products. SafetyLane’s health education staff work closely with Harriet Lane medical providers to meet the safety needs of families. The center’s home-like environment provides an opportunity for families to try a variety of home safety products, receive free personalized safety education, and purchase low-cost safety products (click here to see a list of safety products provided through our safety center).

Safety Lane ServicesSafety Lane is staffed by an experienced health educator with special training in injury prevention and safety. The health education staff are available to work with individuals and families on any of their safety needs. We work in close collaboration with your doctor, but you don’t need a prescription from your doctor to visit us. Come see us to learn more about any home or child safety topic, including but limited to, house fires and smoke alarms, poison prevention and carbon monoxide alarms, falls and stair gates, pedestrian injuries and bike helmets. No appointment is necessary for help with any of these safety topics.

We also have a number of ways to help keep your child safe when traveling by car. We have a one year loaner program for infant safety seats. We offer reduced-costs car seats for purchase. And, our Safety Lane health educator is also a certified car seat technician who has special training in installing and inspecting car seats. She can check or install your safety seat free of charge for all Harriet Lane Clinic families.

Please call 443-287-8896 to schedule an appointment for your car seat check or installation. To best serve you, please have the following information ready when you call:

  • Child's height, weight and age
  • Brand and model of car seat
  • Make, model, and year of car

You may also want to attend a car seat check event. Please visit Maryland Kids in Safety Seats (KISS) or Baltimore County Police Department to see a calendar of upcoming car seat checks and to make an appointment.

Trauma Care & EMS

The morning of July 20, 2004, Connie was driving her usual route to work on a scenic, two-lane, winding road in the horse country of Virginia, when a young man driving the opposite way fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on into her car.  At that moment, Connie’s life depended on the U.S. trauma system.
