Seniors on the Move

Seniors on the M.O.V.E. (Mature Operator Vehicular Education) Program is an interactive, multi-session training program designed to help seniors better self-regulate their driving, keeping them safer on the roads.

Modules for the training series were developed by the Center and its transportation safety partners based on an assessment of current trainings for mature drivers and contributing factors for mature driver crashes as identified in the literature.  All sessions have been designed to complement and build on one another.

Sessions take place in classroom settings and include: 1) “Roadwise Review,”  a driving abilities assessment CD ROM program developed and presented by AAA’s Foundation for Safety and Education complimented “Driving Decisions Workbook” from the University of Michigan; 2) "Road Smart,” a driving abilities review developed by a special committee from the Central Maryland Regional Safe Communities Center, presented by trained driving instructors; 3) “Safer Driving: Me and My Vehicle,” designed to help seniors better understand crash outcomes and the contributing dynamics between the driver, the vehicle and the crash— developed and presented by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene—   and 4) “Being Medwise to Stay Roadwise” Medication Management— developed and presented by the Peter Lamy Center for Drug Therapy and Aging at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Seniors on the M.O.V.E. is a 4-week training program with one two-hour hour training session being held each week for a group no larger than 40 participants. Courses are arranged throughout the state collaboratively with the Maryland Department of Transportation, Highway Safety Office and the Community Traffic Safety Program.

With funding from the Erickson Foundation, Center faculty are conducting a feasibility study that will lead to a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of the program.
