GAVI’S VACCINE IMPLEMENTATION TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CONSORTIUM

Supported Special Studies: List of Related Publications and Presentations

In 2008, the GAVI Alliance commissioned a series of 13 evaluations to help facilitate evidence-based decision making in support of the introduction and implementation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) and rotavirus vaccines in developing countries.

These ‘Special Studies’ were coordinated by the Vaccine Implementation Technical Assistance Consortium (VITAC, formerly AVI-TAC) – a consortium led by PATH, Johns Hopkins University, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and strategically identified as those evaluations critical to fill the highest-priority data needs for evidence-based decision making and for optimizing and sustaining the use of these new vaccines.

This series of 13 evaluations provides policy-relevant evidence of PCV and rotavirus vaccine including: performance and impact in earliest adopting countries, approaches for enhancing vaccine effectiveness, determining economic impact of the prevention of these diseases through vaccination, and providing countries with tools to conduct impact studies appropriately designed for local capacity.

The results of these studies fill important gaps in the evidence base for decisions around vaccine use and can improve the ability of immunization partners to deliver on the health benefit promise of these new vaccines.

VITAC Special Studies were conducted in several regions including countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (pneumococcal and rotavirus studies), Latin America (rotavirus), and South Asia (rotavirus). These evaluations have been carried out together with the University of Witswatersrand, Aga Khan University, Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and International Vaccine Institute and through the collaboration and leadership of partners from beyond VITAC including:  South African National Institute of Communicable Disease, Gambia Medical Research Council, Pan American Health Organization, Nicaragua Ministry of Health, Bolivia Ministry of Health, University of Ghana, World Health Organization, Agence de Medicine Preventive, Princeton University, Institute of Child Health, and University College London.

A list of publications and presentations related to these studies may be found below, updated as of January 3, 2014. This listing includes presentations, articles, and publications either funded through the VITAC grant or related to a VITAC study, based on information provided by partner researchers through calls for updates by the consortium and monitoring of new related articles. It should be considered comprehensive, but not exhaustive.
