1986: Proposal submitted to recruit 640 IDUs and follow them for 5 years to identify factors associated with AIDS

1987: ALIVE I study funded

1988: ALIVE Clinic opens and recruits 2938 IDUS in 13 months

1989: ALIVE II study funded

1994-1995: 434 new IDUs recruited

1998: 244 new IDUs recruited

2000: 51 women from the HERS study enrolled in ALIVE

2005-2008: 1004 new IDUs recruited
