Center Response: Indonesia

In the days and weeks following the Indian Ocean tsunami on December 25, 2004, the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response deployed a number of faculty members to Aceh Province, Indonesia, to assess the health impact of the disaster and to monitor and evaluate the humanitarian response. Specific projects included:

• Assisting UNICEF in conducting and evaluating coverage of a crash campaign to provide measles immunizations to all children 15 and under.
• Coordinating a series of four surveys to measure the tsunami's impact on mortality and injury. This has led to publication of several articles in peer-reviewed journals and NGO reports.
• Establishing a monitoring and evaluation system for Mercy Corps in Aceh Province, to evaluate its cash-for-work, community cash grants and Return Villages programs.
• Participating in a variety of international workshops and conferences to assess the impact of the humanitarian response to the tsunami.
