New Fitness Center Opens at School of Public Health

Students work out at the School's new fitness center.

A satellite to the Cooley Center fitness facility recently opened at the School of Public Health. The Cooley Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health features state-of-the-art “Life Fitness” strength equipment, upright and recumbent bikes, treadmills and elliptical trainers, three adjustable benches and a full set of dumbbells. Each piece of cardiovascular training equipment features a 15-inch flat screen television. A locker room and shower facilities are also available.

A fitness fair will be held to celebrate the grand opening of the new center on Monday, March 29. Students, faculty and staff can have their blood pressure and body fat measurements taken, and perform a strength test in the Anna Baetjer Room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Members are able to exercise at both the Cooley Center, which is located behind Hampton House, at 1620 McElderry Street, and the new satellite facility on the ninth floor of the School of Public Health at 615 N. Wolfe Street. The space for the gym was recently constructed as part of the School’s newly completed teaching and research additions. The satellite gym is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Darryl Waldon, director of the Cooley Center, said, “The new center gives us increased programming flexibility and options, improved campus health awareness, and is a great benefit to employees and students. With facilities in two different areas on campus, members will waste less time getting to the gym, allowing them more time to work out. The Cooley Center at the School is a tremendous addition to the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.”

The main Cooley Center will continue to offer group exercise classes, personal training sessions, an outdoor swimming pool, a multi-purpose court, tennis and racquetball courts, an indoor track and cardio and strength training studios. In addition, the center has special programs, such as “Don’t Gain, Maintain,” which is a program to maintain your weight over the Thanksgiving through New Year holiday season, a weight lifting competition, racquet ball and basketball leagues and the “Cooley Challenge,” a 12-week competition where individuals tone their bodies and compare before and after measurements. --Kenna Brigham

Both facilities are managed by MidAtlantic Corporate Health. For more information, visit www.cooleycenter.com or call 410-955-2513.
