Rita R. Colwell, PhD, a microbiologist and expert on cholera and other infectious diseases, is joining the adjunct faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Colwell announced she is stepping down from her current position as director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) on February 21, 2004.

In addition to her appointment with the School of Public Health, Dr. Colwell said she will assume the position of chair of Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc., a newly created, Washington-based subsidiary of Canon U.S.A., Inc., whose goal is to identify and develop life-science solutions with potential applications in diagnostics and medical instrumentation. She will also serve as Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Colwell plans to continue research work and develop an international center for infectious disease, water and health.
