January 21, 2003 Preliminary Results to be Announced January 23 at Community Forum Ellen Silbergeld, PhD, a professor of environmental health sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, will present preliminary results of an ongoing study of Eastern Shore poultry workers. The findings will be presented at a community forum on January 23, 2003, at 7 p.m. at Salisbury University’s Holloway Hall.
Researchers are in the middle of a study of antibiotic resistance in poultry workers and community members who live near poultry farms in Pocomoke City, Md., and Georgetown, Del. The forum is open to the public. Additional information on opportunities to participate in this ongoing research project, entitled “Community Health Risks of Agricultural Antibiotic Use in the Poultry Industry” will also be available. An open question and answer period will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served.
“The poultry industry is important to the economy and environment of the Eastern Shore. We are committed to conducting a rigorous study, with the cooperation of the community, to understand exposures and health risks that may be associated with working in or living near poultry production sites,” said Dr. Silbergeld.
