December 30, 2002 Researchers from the Brookings Institution-Johns Hopkins Center on Social and Economic Dynamics and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have developed a computer model that illustrates the effects of a smallpox outbreak following a bioterrorism attack in a hypothetical American county. Based on the computer simulation, the Brookings/Johns Hopkins team has developed an alternative strategy for vaccinating against smallpox to the plan recently announced by President Bush.
Joshua M. Epstein, PhD, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Donald S.
