December 20, 2002 Alfred Sommer, MD, MHS, Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, commented on the President Bush’s smallpox vaccination plan in an editorial published in the December 19, 2002, issue of the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Sommer conducted one of the seminal investigations that established the effectiveness of smallpox vaccine in preventing disease and death even when administered four to five days after a person becomes infected with the virus.
