Hopkins Research Suspension

On July 19, 2001, the U.S. Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) ordered the suspension of all federally funded human subject research at The Johns Hopkins University that had been approved under the Multiple Project Assurance M-1011. This decision does not apply to research approved by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, which has its own assurance with the OHRP and its own independent Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to approve and oversee research studies. However, many faculty members at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have joint appointments and research activities with the affected Hopkins facilities. All studies involving human research, including privately funded studies, that were approved by the Joint Committee on Clinical Investigation (JCCI) at the John Hopkins School of Medicine or the Bayview IRB will be restricted until the suspension is lifted. The suspension of human research activities does not affect funding of these studies.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is in close contact with the School of Medicine, and is determining which research projects are specifically affected to ensure compliance with the OHRP orders.
