School Program Promotes AIDS Prevention in Ghana

The San Francisco Chronicle reports on the success of the “Stop AIDS/Love Life” campaign in Ghana. The Stop AIDS/Love Life campaign was launched in 2000 by researchers from the School’s Center for Communication Programs. It uses radio, television, music videos, and testimonials to promote abstinence, fidelity, and condom use.

According to the article and Hopkins researchers, condom use in Ghana has increased from 18 percent in 1998 to 28 percent in 2001. The article says that Ghana has an HIV infection rate of 3.6 percent, and is the only nation in sub-Saharan Africa to maintain a rate below 5 percent, which epidemiologists say is the threshold for keeping the disease under control.
