Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Establishes Degree Program for Asia-Pacific Region

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has signed an agreement with the Education Development Corporation in Taiwan to create a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program for health professionals in the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement was signed on March 5 in Baltimore, Md. by Michael J. Klag, MD, MPH, dean of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Dr. Jenna T. Wang, chief executive officer of Education Development Corporation.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Our mission as a School is to promote public health and share our knowledge with the world. I look forward to working together with our colleagues throughout Asia and the Pacific region to improve health and save lives,” said Klag.

The MPH program will offer courses specifically tailored to health professionals working in Asia-Pacific nations. The three-year degree program will include introductory course work in Baltimore, Md. followed by classes in Singapore and Hong Kong taught by Hopkins faculty. Additional course work will be conducted on the Internet. Courses are expected to begin in early 2009.

The Bloomberg School of Public Health signed a similar agreement on February 24 to develop a Master of Public Health—Doctor of Public Health (MPH-DrPH) Degree Program in Health Care Management and Leadership for students from Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The agreement, signed with the Health Authority—Abu Dhabi (HAAD), also includes the development of research, educational and public health programs. The program will create a “learning network” of leaders who will help ensure the excellence of Abu Dhabi’s health care system. The Bloomberg School of Public Health will assist the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in establishing its own in-country degree program that will be a regional and global center for excellence in health management and leadership education.
