JHSPH Remembers Stephen Okiria : 1967-2010

Stephen Okiria

Stephen Okiria, 43, was killed in one of the bomb attacks in Kampala, Uganda on Sunday night. As a finance manager for the Center for Communication Programs’ (CCP) AFFORD-health marketing initiative, Stephen was participating in a product promotion event with several colleagues from CCP and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at the time of the bombing.

A Ugandan native, Stephen obtained a bachelor of commerce and master of business administration from Makerere University in Kampala. Stephen was a gracious and dedicated professional whose last act was to seek to improve the health of others. His work and life will leave a lasting impression on both the AFFORD program and public health marketing in Uganda. Stephen was also actively involved with a number of civic organizations to better his community.

In addition to his wife Sara Okiria Kooli, Stephen leaves behind six children, ages 3 to 17. A fund has been established for the family of Stephen Okiria. Gifts can be sent to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Office of External Affairs, 615 N. Wolfe Street, Suite E2132, Baltimore, Maryland 21205. Checks should be made out to Johns Hopkins University, with the notation “Stephen Okiria Family Fund” in the memo section of the check. To give online, go to http://www.jhsph.edu/stephenokiria.
