Marie Diener-West to Chair MPH Program

Marie Diener-West, PhD, has been named chair of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s master of public health (MPH) degree program. Diener-West will begin her new duties on May 31.

“Marie is well known to many in the School, particularly for her excellence in teaching and mentoring students. I simply could not think of a person who would be better suited to take over the MPH program and carry its activities forward,” said Michael J. Klag, MD, MPH, dean of the Bloomberg School.

Diener-West will replace Ron Brookmeyer who in December announced his plans to step down as chair.  “Ron has had an incredibly successful tenure as chair of the School's MPH program and his decision is a loss for all of us. His leadership over the last six years has made our MPH program the best in the world and a model for all other programs,” said Klag. Brookmeyer will return to his teaching and research activities at the Bloomberg School.

Diener-West earned her PhD in biostatistics from the School of Public Health. She joined the faculty in 1986 and was named the inaugural Helen Abbey-Margaret Merrell Professor of Biostatistics Education in 2004. She is also a 4-time recipient of the Bloomberg School’s Golden Apple Award, which is awarded annually by students to outstanding teachers.
