Fogarty Program Receives NIH Grant

The Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health received a $3.71 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The renewed funding, awarded on March 15, 2008, will support the training and research conducted by the program over the next five years.

Since 1989, the Fogarty AITRP has worked to provide training and support to collaborative HIV and AIDS research between Johns Hopkins faculty and a number of developing countries.

“The continued funding from the NIH grant not only provides financial support but it also enables us to address the critical needs of our AITRP partner countries,” says Chris Beyrer, MD, director of Fogarty AITRP and a professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Epidemiology. “The research done in these countries is invaluable because both faculty and students gain experience working in settings where the disease is prevalent. This also opens doors for many host institutions to recruit some of their country’s best researchers through their partnership with Johns Hopkins University. Overall, the program brings a more diverse and talented pool of students to all universities involved.”

The Fogarty AITRP at Johns Hopkins University is approaching its fifth five-year funding cycle and maintains its standing as one of the largest and oldest National Institutes of Fogarty Health AITRP grant recipients.
