Bandeen-Roche Named Interim Chair of Biostatistics

Bandeen-Roche
Karen Bandeen-Roche

Karen Bandeen-Roche, PhD, has been named interim chair of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics, effective July 1, 2008.

“Karen is an outstanding biostatistician, collaborator and mentor who is widely admired, respected and held in deep affection,” said Michael J. Klag, MD, MPH, dean of the Bloomberg School. “She is a bridge builder who has agreed to assume this responsibility and to put some of her own work aside because she cares deeply about the department, its culture and its accomplishments.”

Bandeen-Roche joined the School in 1990 and has been a professor in the Department of Biostatistics since 2002. She received the School’s Advising, Mentoring and Teaching Recognition Award in 2001 and 2005. She is also a 1997 Brookdale National Fellow, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and served as chair of the ASA Biometrics Section in 2006.

In naming Bandeen-Roche, Klag noted that the search for a permanent department chair is progressing well.  “Having Karen at the helm of the department as an interim will ensure that we will recruit the best possible person to the position,” he elaborated.

Bandeen-Roche will replace Scott Zeger who served as department chair for more than 12 years. Zeger will continue to serve as vice provost of research at Johns Hopkins University, a position he accepted in March of 2008.--Natalie Wood-Wright
