Jonathan Samet, MD, the Jacob I and Irene B. Fabrikant Professor in Health, Risk and Society and chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, was recognized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for his contributions to creating smoke-free environments in the Americas. PAHO director Mirta Roses presented awards to Samet and several others on May 31 in recognition of World No Tobacco Day. Samet is one of the world’s leading experts on the health effects of active and passive smoking. He is also director of the Bloomberg School’s Institute for Global Tobacco Control and was the senior scientific editor of the 2006 U.S. Surgeon General’s report—The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke.
