President George W. Bush has declared April 25 as Malaria Awareness Day—a day African nations have observed as Africa Malaria Day since 2000. The day serves as a reminder of the global impact of the disease, particularly in Africa, where 90 percent of all malaria infections occur. Every year, between 300 and 500 million people are infected with malaria, resulting in over 1 million deaths annually. Every 30 seconds, a child dies from malaria. The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) was founded as a state-of-the-art research facility that would mount a broad program of research to treat and control malaria, develop a vaccine and find new drug targets to prevent and cure this deadly disease.
