Barbara Starfield Given 2004 Baxter International Foundation Prize

Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, was recently given the prestigious Baxter International Foundation Prize by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). The $10,000 prize is the most prestigious and highly regarded recognition an individual researcher can receive in a career of health services research. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will also receive $15,000 to continue to build support for health services research.

Dr. Starfield’s most recent research has focused on determinants of health and equity in health and effectiveness of health services. She has also conducted assessments of population health, primary and specialty care and their interrelationships, the length of care and its effects and coordination of care.

The Baxter International Foundation Prize was established to recognize worldwide contributions to the improved health of the public through innovative health services research and the contributions to the public, academic and professional stature of health services research. It was also created to stimulate the recognition and adoption of the significant contribution of health services research to improved health services delivery.

The Prize is administered by the AUPHA and funded by The Baxter International Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of Baxter International. It is awarded at the AUPHA Annual Meeting, which will be held in San Diego, Calif., June 3-6, 2004. - - Kenna L. Brigham
