Dean Alfred Sommer , MD, MHS ’73, meets with Markus Altwegg, PhD, president of F. Hoffman-LaRoche Ltd. and a member of the School’s Honorary Committee. Dr. Altwegg visited several faculty members in August to learn more about research activities at the School’s Sight and Life Institute.
Seung-Hum Yu , MD, PhD, DrPH ’82, was named dean of the Yonsei University School of Public Health in South Korea. Vallop Thaineua, MD, MPH ’76, was appointed Permanent Secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health James Cobey , MD, MPH ’71, was the recipient of the 2002 Frank Annunzio Award in the Arts/Humanities/ Humanitarian field. The award is sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and is intended to honor living Americans who are improving the world through ingenuity and innovation. Dr. Cobey received the award for his work with tuberculosis and polio patients, land mine survivors, and war victims. Jonathan Samet , MD, MS, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology, received a grant from the Fogarty International Center to combat the growing incidence of tobacco-caused illness and death in the developing world. Dr. Samet and his colleagues will conduct tobacco-control research and training programs at the Chinese Academy of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute of Brazil, and the National Institute for Public Health in Mexico. Gerard Anderson, PhD, professor of health policy and management, was selected as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine. Dr. Anderson was ranked number 29 on the readers’ poll and is one of only four academics to make the magazine’s list of movers and shakers. Dr. Anderson is director of the School’s Center for Hospital Finance and Management and director of the Partnership for Solutions initiative, which is working to improve the care and quality of life for millions of Americans with chronic health conditions. Gregory Glass, PhD ’83, has been promoted to professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Patricia O’Campo , PhD ’89, has been promoted to professor in the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences. Kathleen Long, PhD ’81, RN, dean of the University of Florida, College of Nursing, was named president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the national organization of baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing education programs. Patty Vernon, PhD, a student in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, received the award for best poster by a predoctoral student at the Conference on Neuroimmune Circuits and Infectious Diseases held in October.  |
