Published by the Office of Communications | Sylvia Eggleston Wehr, associate dean of External Affairs, met with Seung-Hum Yu, MD, PhD, DrPH ’82, dean of the Yonsei University School of Public Health, Mo-Im Kim, DrPH ’73, MPH ’68, former minister of Health and Welfare for South Korea, and other Johns Hopkins University alumni during a trip to Seoul in October. Robert S. Lawrence, MD, professor and associate dean for professional education programs, and a world leader in human rights and the environment, received the 2002 Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism on November 5, for his lifelong efforts to improve health care, human rights, and the environment. Scott Zeger, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics, is among the 25 most cited mathematical scientists of the last decade, according to Science Watch, a publication of the Institute for Scientific Information. Dr. Zeger placed twelfth on the list, which included 18 biostatisticians. Robert E. Black, MD, MPH, the Edgar Berman professor and chair of International Health, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in November. Members work with the Institute on committees and studies that address a broad range of health policy issues. James M. Tielsch, MHS ’82, PhD ’82, professor of International Health, received the F. Park Lewis, MD, Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2002 from Prevent Blindness America. Nathaniel F. Pierce, MD, professor of International Health, was one of four recipient of the first Pollin Prize in Pediatric Research on November 15, 2002. Dr. Pierce was chosen for his seminal contributions to the discovery and implementation of Oral Rehydration Therapy. Laurie Schwab Zabin, PhD ’80, professor of Population and Family Health Sciences, was recognized for work on behalf of social justice at the first Women Who Dared celebration sponsored by the Jewish Women’s Archive. Etsuko Kita, MD, PhD ’91, Afghan relief worker with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund operation, is this year’s recipient of the Avon Awards to Women. Kita won the award for her decades of dedication to helping refugees around the world, paving the way for Japanese nationals to follow a career in international development and humanitarian aid for developing countries facing conflicts. Jennifer Ryea and Yue Yin, PhD students in the Department of Biostatistics, are the recipients of this year’s Glaxo SmithKline Scholar Award, which is intended to encourage interest in biostatistics and honors previous research by an incoming student.  |
