The Centers for Law and the Public's Health: A Collaborative has a multidimensional mission which includes: (a) using the law as a tool for protecting and enhancing the health and safety of populations; (b) serving as a primary resource on public health law for public health practitioners, lawyers, legislators, policy-makers, advocates, and the community; (c) improving understanding about how the law affects the prevention of disease and injury through research, education, training, collaboration, and dissemination of information; and (d) promoting the development and implementation of an effective public health law infrastructure. With existing funding from the public sector and private foundations, the Center is dedicated to using the law as a tool for the protection and enhancement of the public's health by:
The Center and its faculty have a reputation for scholarly excellence and long-standing experience working with law- and policymakers at every level of government (international, national, state, tribal, and local) as well as advocates in multiple subject areas. Center faculty members have consulted or have strong relationships with members of Congress and their staffs, state and local legislative and executive branch officials, leaders of national, state, and local public health agencies, and members of the judiciary. Our scholarly and applied products include model legislative provisions and analyses, governmental reports, Amicus briefs in select judicial cases, public health law checklists, guidance documents, legal training modules, and presentations. These products are designed to help clarify public health and legal theories, ideas, concepts, or arguments for key policymakers and public health practitioners at every level of government and within the private sector.
