Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is spread by mosquitoes. It is by far the world's most deadly tropical disease, killing more people than any other communicable disease except tuberculosis. It is responsible for over a million deaths each year, especially in children and pregnant women. The malaria parasite is a complicated organism. Like HIV, malaria is constantly changing. Scientists do not yet totally understand the germ-fighting responses that protect humans against malaria. To learn more about malaria and malaria vaccines, please click here to visit the CIR website. The CIR is conducting clinical trials for malaria vaccines.
