Preventive Medicine Electives

Preventive Medicine. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it?  Diverse job opportunities, academic training as part of the residency program, and the opportunity to work with population-based projects to achieve far-reaching change.

To get a realistic idea of the wide variety of projects and goals that exist within Preventive Medicine, you might want to take a Preventive Medicine elective and get some first-hand experience. If you don't have a chance to participate in a medical student elective, it's not too late:  interns and residents in other medical specialties can also participate in Preventive Medicine electives.

It may also be helpful to keep an eye open for annual meetings of various public health and Preventive Medicine organizations. Attendance would provide a good chance to gather some advice and get a feel for a few different programs. The largest gatherings are the American Public Health Association (APHA) conference and the annual meeting of the American College of Preventive Medicine. There is also the Paul Ambrose Health Promotion Student Leadership Symposium sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM).
