  • Baltimore, MD: The Impact of Race on the Welfare of Children: A Town Hall Meeting. Presented by Oronde Miller, Senior Associate, Center for the Study of Social Policy. February 16, 2012, 6:00 – 7:30 P.M., Kelley Lecture Hall, Goucher College, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road, Baltimore, MD.  Every day in America, approximately 700 children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care as a result of abuse and neglect.  Nearly half of those children will be children of color.  Once they enter the foster care system, children of color are more likely than white children to drift from one foster home to another, end up in group care and have poor outcomes.  They are less likely to be reunited with their families or otherwise find permanent homes.  Come to learn about what you can do to help address these disparities in the welfare of our children. This event is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required. Space is limited. To register, please go to http://marylandcasa.org/raceandchildwelfare.aspx

  • Baltimore, MD: Protecting Our Children Professional Training. February 17, 2012, 9:00am– 2:00pm, 2300 North Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21218. Participants will also be provided resources for helping a child who has disclosed abuse and getting that child the appropriate help.  On street metered parking is available. Approved by Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for 3 Category 1 continuing education credits. Cost: $45 with CEU’s and $35 without CEU’s. Lunch will be provided. • The Fraternal Order of X-Offenders is involved in a number of activities aimed at breaking the cycle of violence by supporting ex-offenders to become change agents, increasing ex-offender leadership and involvement in community-driven alternatives, and initiating and expanding the collective action needed to deter, decrease and prevent the pandemic of juvenile delinquency and adult criminality gripping Baltimore and many other communities. Information about the FOXO training DVD: The Psychology and Sociology of Criminology is available on the website http://www.foxo.us/.  To learn more about FOXO, visit their website at hhtp://www.foxo.us or email Brother Bey at thinkingisdestiny@yahoo.com or call 410-262-4456. The radio show provides a voice to those attempting to change their thinking and behaviors, informing ex-offenders, their families, and others of opportunities, increasing access to strategies that work, and exposing those that don’t. REPORTS, RESEARCH & RECENT PUBLICATIONS

10. What are Districts' Written Policies Regarding Student Substance-Related Incidents? Recent events have increased interest in district policies relating to student substance use and whether they best serve the needs of their communities and students. To better understand the nature of the policies that may be in use around the country, the Institute of Education Sciences commissioned a study to examine the features of the written substance-related policies for the 100 largest school districts in the country. The full report is available online at http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/pubs/20124022/ [source: Office of Safe and Healthy Students Prevention News Digest]

11. The Truth About Consequences: Studies point toward Sparing use of Formal Juvenile Justice System Processing and Incarceration. This research summary, from the National Juvenile Justice Network, briefly reviews recent studies in the juvenile justice system showing that formal system processing doesn't reduce delinquency and that incarceration is ineffective. http://njjn.org/uploads/digital_library/NJJN-Truth-about-Consequences_Fact-Sheet-FINAL_Jan23-2012.pdf?utm_source=February+2%2C+2012%3A+&utm_campaign=Nwsltr-Feb2-2012&utm_medium=email

12. Invisible Students: The Role of Alternative and Adult Education in the Connecticut School-to-Prison Pipeline. Using Connecticut as a case study, this report explores the pressures propelling the secret pipeline, documents the “de facto discipline” practices that place students on it, examines the educational experiences and outcomes of students that land in alternative and adult education programs, and advances recommendations for reform. The secret pipeline refers to the mechanisms and strategies employed by school districts to remove students who present academic and behavioral challenges while circumventing due process and skirting accountability and responsibility for the educational outcomes of those students. http://www.njjn.org/article/juvenile-justice-roundup-school-prison-pipeline-resources-?utm_source=February+2%2C+2012%3A+&utm_campaign=Nwsltr-Feb2-2012&utm_medium=email [source: National Juvenile Justice Network]

13. Fact Sheet: Public Health Contributions to Preventing Violence. This UNITY fact sheet highlights how public health adds value to any effort to address violence and complements criminal justice approaches. "Public Health Contributions to Preventing Violence" describes how public health's unique perspective and areas of expertise could strengthen local initiatives. http://preventioninstitute.org/component/jlibrary/article/id-321/127.html [source: Prevention Institute]

14. Social Networks, Co-offending, and Gang Membership Among Latino Youth, a presentation by Urban Institute summarizes findings from the Norms and Networks of Latino Youth project, funded by OJJDP. Youth in a small neighborhood were surveyed about their own pro-social and delinquent behaviors and their social networks. Survey respondents named 20 close contacts and answered questions about those individuals. Using social network analysis methods, researchers examined both personal networks and individual delinquency and the whole network (comprising all youths’ overlapping contacts), to analyze group behaviors related to co-offending and peer influence. The findings are relevant to developing appropriate interventions for delinquency and shed light on the efficacy of neighborhood-based interventions.
