The PBISPlus Project was collaboratively developed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Sheppard Pratt Health System (SPHS), and Johns Hopkins University (JHU). It will determine if providing enhanced training, support, and on-site technical assistance to the collaborative problem-solving teams at schools already implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) will enhance the quality of behavior support plans and interventions for students not responding adequately to the universal PBIS program. The three-year project will include 46 elementary schools implementing the universal PBIS program. Data will be collected regarding school discipline practices, organizational climate, and student behaviors. Funding for PBISPlus is provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. For more information on PBIS in Maryland, link to www.pbismaryland.org. What is PBISPlus? The PBISPlus Project intends to improve the outcomes of children in Maryland elementary schools implementing school-wide PBIS. The overall goal is to determine if providing enhanced training, support, and on-site technical assistance to the collaborative problem-solving teams at schools already implementing PBIS will enhance the quality of behavior support plans and interventions for students not responding adequately to the universal PBIS program. Why do PBISPlus? The professional development, support, and technical assistance provided to the school teams in the project is expected to improve academic achievement and result in fewer students requiring special education services, receiving office disciplinary referrals, and being identified by teachers as having behavioral problems in the classroom. Who can participate? Recruitment of schools to participate in the PBISPlus Project begins in the spring of 2007. Information sessions will be conducted at the School Board for interested principals to learn more about the eligibility requirements and the project details. What is involved? Information will be collected in October 2007 and annually in the spring for the following three years from the teams about the supports provided to students not responding to the universal PBIS program. Data will also be collected on the schools’ organizational characteristics and student discipline. How to learn more?
