The Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness offers three levels of public health-oriented training that meet requirements established in the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a comprehensive, national framework for incident management used by response agencies from all disciplines and jurisdictions across the United States. IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction, gives an overview of NIMS (comprised of the Incident Command System, Multi-agency Coordination Systems, and Public Information Systems) for all levels of public health workers. The training takes 4 hours, including supervised administration of the official FEMA IS-700 exam. (Learners must score at least 75% on the exam to receive a FEMA certificate of completion for IS-700.) IS-100 (ICS 100) Introduction to Incident Command System focuses on ICS and more completely describes the system's organizational levels and responsibilities of public health workers in a crisis response. The training takes 3.5 hours and also includes the official FEMA IS-100 exam. (As with IS-700, learners must score at least 75% on the exam to receive a FEMA certificate of completion.) IS-200 (ICS 200) ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents teaches ICS concepts and principles for supervisors and those public health workers expected to fill leadership roles in a crisis response. Due to the content's complexity and interactive exercises necessary to improve content retention and improve flexible application of ICS to new situations, the training takes 6 hours, which includes the official FEMA IS-200 exam. (Learners must score 75% to receive a FEMA certificate of completion.)
NOTE: Attendees must have taken IS-100 no more than six months before taking the IS-200 training. All three trainings conform to official FEMA mandates; include interactive lecture materials; and are tailored to meet the unique emergency preparedness demands and challenges of the local public health workforce.
