Practice for Students

At JHSPH, there are a number of ways that students can engage in the "real-world" practice of public health.  Internship programs provide mentored, for-credit, unpaid experience at community-based organizations, or state or local health departments. These internship experiences give students the chance to work with professionals in running a public health project. They also involve required seminars, papers and presentations and meet the population health requirement of the MPH program.  Additionally, students can select from a variety of practice-based, academic courses offered throughout the school year, or seek out special study and independent projects to gain more experience in applying their public health knowledge.

Learning and working in a practice setting enables public health graduate students to gain insight about how their courses in public health impact their  careers, outside academia. The MPH Community Practicum is limited to MPH students, while PHASE accepts MPH as well as MHS or doctoral students. Students will earn academic credit (usually 2 credits per term) for these projects and will be required to register with the appropriate course codes once matched to a specific project by the end of September.
