| The second year is designed to provide all residents with exposure to a range of important settings in occupational and environmental health: government, clinical, corporate, and union. Residents are given a unique opportunity to apply their skills to real-world problems including occupational injuries and illnesses, disability management, employee health and wellness, environmental exposures, and other emerging occupational and environmental medicine issues. The second year consists of 10 months of required rotations (with choices within these requirements) and two months of electives. In addition, second year residents continue to attend didactic conferences.
The three core rotations are In order to gain additional corporate and industrial experience, the residents have a choice of one of the following three two-month employer-based rotations. Residents select from a number of elective rotations for the remaining two months of the practicum year. Elective rotations allow the individual resident to tailor the practicum year to fit his or her career objectives. Elective sites include corporate rotations such as McCormick and Company, Inc., at its spice and food manufacturing facility in Hunt Valley, MD; clinical rotations with Johns Hopkins faculty in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM & R); and with faculty in the Allergy & Immunology Service at the National Naval Medical Center; government rotations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Maryland Department of the Environment, and public health rotations with the School's Center for Public Health Preparedness. Residents may also use elective time to complete their research projects. The resident can devote special studies courses to research activities in the first year, and then use elective rotation time to complete the research project and manuscript preparation.
