Funding Proposal Preparation

This page summarizes the general steps necessary to process a funding proposal through the School. Links to resources that may assist you through the process are also provided. The time frame for receiving funding will vary from a few months up to a year, depending on the specific opportunity. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead and allow ample preparation time for your funding application. Establish a timeline that gives you plenty of time, especially for steps that involve others. This page can be printed for use as a checklist.

Steps in the funding process

1.  Identify funding opportunity

• Search SFR database
• Search other recommended sites

2.  Complete the necessary application materials

• Application forms
  • Federal SF424 forms for Electronic Submission
  • Federal Grant Application (form 398)
  • Federal Individual NRSA Fellowship Application (form 416) and related NRSA information
  • Individual agency forms can be downloaded from the agency websites or paper copies can be obtained through contacting the agency.
• Supporting documentation - Read your program announcement carefully for all requested supporting documentation. Be sure to allow sufficient processing time when requesting information from external sources. Examples of supporting documentation include:
  • Reference letters
  • Transcripts

3.  Approvals

• Institutional Review Board compliance: ALL proposed research involving human subjects requires all personnel associated with the project to be certified via the successful completion of the CITI online human subjects training module . An approved protocol MUST be obtained prior to contact with humans.
• Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)Compliance: All animal users MUST be registered with the Animal Surveillance Program in Occupational Health Services. An approved protocol MUST be obtained before animals can be purchased. Questions involving submissions of protocols to the IACUC should be addressed to the IACUC at (443) 287-3738. An online training module MUST be completed by all animal users.

4.  Signatures and Submission

• Work through your departmental administrative office to complete the electronic submission requirements and obtain necessary institutional signatures.  Allow 1-2 weeks prior to the application due date for this process.
