The Commodore John Rodgers Elementary and Middle School
Function of organization/site:
Commodore John Rodgers is a Baltimore City public school providing academic instruction to children in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Long-term partnerships are possible if a volunteer or group has an area of expertise they would like to share with our students on a consistent basis. Examples include enrichment workshops or coaching sports and extra-curricular activities.Involvement can also include funding opportunities. The last 15 months have not been easy. The work we are facing to turn this school around is daunting. It sometimes feels like there isn't enough time in the day, there is too much to overcome, and there aren't adequate resources for support. However, the one thing that does not change is that there are more than 500 students and families that walk through our doors every morning, and what they have to overcome is truly overwhelming. They do not deserve to be let down. What they deserve is the opportunity to attain an excellent education and the opportunity to pursue what they want to be in life. Our students are moving closer to fulfilling the mission of "From Commodore to College: 100% for 100%." However, there are still considerable obstacles facing our students:
* More than 90% of students qualify for FREE lunch. CJR is a Title 1 school with a high poverty rate.
* Almost 90% of students are below grade level in reading. Many of these students are 3-4 grade levels behind.
The school operates Monday – Thursday, 7:30am-3pm and Fridays, 7:30am-1:30pm. Most volunteer opportunities will occur outside of those hours so as not to disturb instruction. Afternoon and weekend projects can include, but are not limited painting, cleaning and decorating, and book sorting/organization.
Within walking distance of East Baltimore Hopkins campus (4 blocks).
